The Ministère de l’Éducation et Enseignement supérieur (MEES) enables individuals to obtain recognition for their prior learning and competencies as they work toward a Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS) or an Attestation of Vocational Specialization (AVS).
The prior learning and skills of an individual are evaluated and recognized according to competencies defined in the programs of study. Therefore it is not so much the individual’s experience that is recognized, but rather, the prior learning or competencies stemming from their experience. These competencies may have been acquired in a variety of places including schools and the workplace, or during an array of different activities (volunteer work, private courses).
Anyone wishing to obtain such recognition must prove that they have indeed acquired the prior knowledge and competencies in question, and must take part in evaluation activities. At the end of this process, candidates must complete any missing training or education components required to obtain their DVS or AVS.
